Let’s talk about the living room.
For most people, it’s the first thing guests see, the space we clean up the fastest, and the one that gets the most attention (and often the least intention). For years, I designed my living room like a picture: beautiful, balanced, and perfectly “finished.” But it didn’t really feel right for my life.
As a change strategist, I’ve seen this disconnect over and over in homes, in systems, and especially in life. When something looks like it should work but doesn’t feel aligned, we end up ignoring it, walking past it, and making peace with low-key tension we never fully name.
But when I took a step back, I asked myself a different question:
Not just for others. Not for Instagram. For me.
So I moved things around. I introduced textures I truly loved. I replaced the coffee table with one that didn’t just match, but supported our rhythms and routines (like being able to sit comfortably on the floor to eat Chinese food while watching tv). I created lighting layers that made mornings feel soft and evenings feel warm. I went beyond decorating…I strategically designed.
Now, the living room works because it’s tuned into how we live. It’s where we have slow Saturday mornings with bacon and fresh air from the lanai. Where the laptop comes out on my cushy lap desk for creative sprints. And it’s where the people I love the most can land, lounge, and stay awhile.
Of course it’s still beautiful. But now the beauty is functional, felt, and not just seen.
If you’re feeling disconnected from your living room, try these three shifts to bring it into your life:
Your living room shouldn’t be a stage. Make it a place where your life can happen.
